30th Street Station: A Cathedral of Transit

by team6 months agoarchitecture

Completed in 1933, 30th Street Station is one of the most architecturally magnificent train stations in America. Its Neoclassical exterior gives way to an Art Deco main hall beneath a soaring 95-foot coffered ceiling. The station handles more than 5.5 million Amtrak passengers a year — it's the third busiest Amtrak station in the country. Walker Hancock's 1950 bronze of the Archangel Michael, known as the "Angel of the Resurrection," memorializes Pennsylvania Railroad employees who died in World War II.
