The Damen Silos: Abandoned Grain Towers That Once Fed a Nation
by LocaleLore5 months agohistory
For nearly half a century they stood like ancient ruins along the south branch of the Chicago River in McKinley Park: the Damen Silos, a cluster of enormous concrete grain storage towers that sat vacant from 1977. Built in 1906 for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to store grain from the Midwest before it was shipped east, the silos held hundreds of thousands of bushels at capacity. They were rendered permanently unusable in 1977 when a massive grain dust explosion — grain dust is highly flammable — destroyed the elevator mechanism inside. The damage was too expensive to repair and the rail freight business was already declining. The silos sat empty for decades, slowly being colonized by vegetation and birds. They became an unlikely landmark visible from the highway, a monument to Chicago's grain-trading past. Various redevelopment proposals came and went. After the state sold the site in 2022, demolition began in July 2025, and the silos came down over the months that followed.
