During the Civil War, Philadelphia was home to many military hospitals. The largest was Satterlee Hospital in West Philadelphia, which held as many as 4,500 patients at once after Gettysburg. Located near what is now Clark Park in the Spruce Hill neighborhood, the hospital treated some 50,000 soldiers between 1862 and 1865. A small memorial in Clark Park marks the site, though most Philadelphians walk past it without knowing.
