Clothespin: The Giant Sculpture Nobody Expected
by team6 months agoart
Claes Oldenburg's 45-foot steel "Clothespin" sculpture has stood at 15th and Market Streets since 1976, towering over the entrance to Centre Square. The pop art giant was controversial when first installed — critics called it absurd to place a massive clothespin across from City Hall. Oldenburg said the two halves pressing together resembled Brancusi's "The Kiss" and symbolized love. Today it's one of Philadelphia's most beloved landmarks and a favorite selfie spot.
