The Underground Railroad at Johnson House

by team6 months agohistory

The Johnson House in Germantown was a documented station on the Underground Railroad. Built in 1768, it was home to a Quaker family whose members helped freedom seekers escape to the North, chiefly in the 1850s. Visitors can still see the attic space where, by family accounts, people escaping slavery were hidden. It is one of the few Underground Railroad sites with strong documentation — family accounts, including those tying the house to William Still, show the Johnsons actively sheltered escaped enslaved people. Tradition holds that Harriet Tubman also visited, though her visit remains unconfirmed.
