Fort Mifflin, built in 1771 on Mud Island in the Delaware River, is considered one of the most haunted places in America. The fort withstood a brutal British bombardment in 1777 — the largest in the Revolutionary War — and was later used as a Civil War prison. Ghost hunters have reported screams from the casemates, a "Screaming Woman" in the officers' quarters, and a "Faceless Man" often linked to William Howe, a Union deserter who was hanged at the fort in 1864. The fort offers overnight ghost hunts.
