Independence Hall is the only building in the world where both the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the U.S. Constitution (1787) were debated and adopted. The Assembly Room where delegates gathered still contains the original chair used by George Washington, with its famous carved sun on the crest. Benjamin Franklin reportedly remarked that he had often wondered during the Convention whether the sun was rising or setting — at its close, he declared it was "a rising sun."
