Albert C. Barnes amassed one of the greatest collections of Post-Impressionist and early Modern art in the world — Renoirs, Cézannes, Matisses, Picassos — and deliberately hung them in unconventional arrangements alongside African sculpture and metalwork. Barnes despised the Philadelphia art establishment and refused public access for decades. After a bitter legal battle, the collection was controversially moved from its original Merion location to a new building on the Parkway in 2012.
