On October 4, 1777, George Washington launched a daring surprise attack on British forces camped in Germantown. The plan called for four columns to converge simultaneously at dawn, but thick fog caused confusion and friendly fire between American units. The battle was a tactical defeat, but it impressed France with the Continental Army's fighting spirit and, alongside the victory at Saratoga, helped secure the French alliance that would help win the war. The Cliveden mansion, where British soldiers barricaded themselves, still stands.
