The Philadelphia Museum of Art holds over 240,000 works spanning 2,000 years — including one of the world's best collections of Impressionist paintings, an entire medieval cloister transported stone by stone from France, and a Japanese teahouse. The Greek Revival building was designed by Horace Trumbauer, Julian Abele (one of the first prominent African American architects), and C.C. Zantzinger. Construction began in 1919, and the main building opened in 1928. The 2021 Frank Gehry renovation added about 90,000 square feet of new public space, including new galleries.
