The 15 Victorian boathouses along the Schuylkill River have been outlined in lights since 1979, creating one of Philadelphia's most iconic nighttime views. Most house individual rowing clubs, some dating back to the 1850s. The Schuylkill Navy, founded in 1858, is the oldest amateur athletic governing body in the United States. The best view is from the opposite bank at the Spring Garden Street Bridge.
